Cagliari claim that they could get rid of goalkeeper Federico Marchetti in the January transfer window after the Italian made it clear that he wanted to leave this summer.

Arsenal were linked with a bid for the Italy international, who took over from the injured Gianluigi Buffon at the World Cup, but now Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in securing his services as a back-up to their established first-choices of Petr Cech and Joe Hart respectively.

Marchetti had told Italian Sky Sports 24 that he was keen to move away from Serie A and now Cagliari president Massimo Cellino says he could pay for his mistake.

"It will become important in the January transfer window," said Cellino. "Marchetti is training as a professional, but he made unfortunate statements in an interview. He created problems with a certain attitude, and, despite being a great guy, he could pay for his nonsense."

AS Roma and Genoa are also interested in the stopper, who is contracted to Cagliari until 2012, although it seems likely that he will choose to leave Italy.
