Manchester United midfielder Anderson has returned to training following a lengthy lay-off due to injury, but Rio Ferdinand will be absent until the end of September.

Anderson suffered a cruciate ligament injury in February and missed the remainder of United's season and Brazil's World Cup campaign as a result.

But the midfielder is back in training and could be in contention for a place in the United side to face Everton on September 12.

Defender Ferdinand, who also missed the World Cup due to a knee injury, still has a number of weeks of rehabilitation before he can be considered for a return.

"The good news is that Anderson started football training yesterday," Sir Alex Ferguson said on Friday. "We're pleased with that.

"We are still thinking the end of September for Rio. It was a medial ligament problem rather than a cruciate, so the recovery time is exactly what we thought.

"It was a freak. It is nothing to do with his back. We just had to treat it the proper way. These things are never easy."
