Real Madrid will trim some members of their squad, after a summer of more new arrivals at the Berbabeu, according to general manager Jorge Valdano.

Madrid have brought a host of new faces into their side, with Germany star Mesut Ozil the latest to arrive, but Jose Mourinho is keen to cut down the squad's size and has therefore put the rest of Europe on alert over who he lets go.

Valdano told Marca: "We have 26 players right now, so we need to lighten the squad and it will happen in the coming days. This position does not affect the Spanish players currently on our books."

Midfielders Mahamadou Diarra, Fernando Gago and Lassana Diarra are tipped to be some of the first names out of the door, while the future of Dutch star Rafael Van der Vaart is also up in the air, despite his claims that he will stay to fight for his place.

With the midfielder reportedly available for as little as £8 million, the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool will all keep tabs on the situation in Spain with great interest.
