Jones joins the club for a fee of £2.3 million and will act as understudy to established No. 1 Pepe Reina, competing with Brazilian Diego Cavalieri for a place on the bench.

Manager Roy Hodgson said: "We set about the task of finding someone who would be as good a complement to Reina as Cavalieri has been.

"Brad Jones is the man we have chosen to back up Pepe Reina, to put him under pressure to some extent but, most importantly, be ready to play.''

A club statement read: "Liverpool have completed the signing of goalkeeper Brad Jones from Middlesbrough.

"The 28-year-old Australian agreed terms and passed a medical earlier in the week, and has now put pen to paper on his three-year contract."

Jones, 28, emerged from the Middlesbrough academy and has spent loan spells with Stockport, Rotherham, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday.

He becomes Liverpool's sixth signing of the summer following Joe Cole, Danny Wilson, Christian Poulsen, Milan Jovanovic and Jonjo Shelvey.
