Flu slip as Corinthians bounce back top

July 26, 2010

Corinthians moved back to the summit of the Brazilian Campeonato with a 3-1 win over Guarani. With former leaders Fluminense being held to a 1-1 draw at Botafogo, the result returned Corinthians to the top of the pile by a point from their title rivals.

Jorge Henrique got Corinthians off to a flying start with a goal after a minute but Marcelino levelled for Guarani just after the hour.

Things looked bleak for Corinthians when Bruno Dentinho was dismissed two minutes later but it quickly became 10 versus 10 as Carneiro Ailson saw red. Corinthians responded and two late goals from Bruno Cesar wrapped up the win.

Fluminense were held in a match which saw opponents Botafogo finish with nine men. Marcio Emerson put Fluminense ahead after an hour before Cunha Edno levelled for the hosts. Paulo Somalia and Danny Morais saw red for Botafogo late on but Fluminense were unable to force a winner.

Ceara stay third after a 0-0 draw with Palmeiras, while Internacional are fourth after Freda Taison's fourth-minute strike secured a 1-0 triumph over Flamengo.

Cruzeiro and Gremio drew 2-2, Goias lost 2-0 at home to Atletico Paranaense and Santos were 1-0 victors against Sao Paulo.
