Middlesbrough have completed the £1.5 million signing of Stephen McManus from Celtic, with the defender agreeing a three-year deal with the Championship club.

McManus passed a medical on Monday and arrives after impressing Boro boss Gordon Strachan during a loan spell on Teesside last season.

McManus was a regular at Parkhead during Strachan's Celtic tenure, but was overlooked by now departed boss Tony Mowbray last season.

The 27-year-old Scotland international joins an exodus south of the border, joining Kris Boyd and Andrew Halliday at the Riverside Stadium, while a deal for Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson is reportedly in the pipeline.

Boro said they were "not as far down the line" in concluding a deal for Thomson who cost Rangers £2 million from Hibernian in 2007.

Strachan said earlier this week: "We'll keep trying to add and add. I hope we can make a right few signings over the next few weeks of different types. Some will be transfers and some will be loans, I imagine.

"But transfers take a long time and a lot of hard work. We set the ball rolling with Kris and Nicky [Bailey, from Charlton] done this early, but fair play to the chairman and Keith Lamb, they've got two of our main targets nice and early and it's been hard work."
