Barrera, 23, has been used as a super-sub by Mexico boss Javier Aguirre at this summer's World Cup in South Africa and is expected to be handed another chance to impress against Argentina on Sunday.

The speedy midfielder came through the ranks at Mexican side UNAM Pumas and scored 12 goals in 28 games last season to help cement his place in the national team.

Barrera is now ready for a new challenge and said: "I hope I can go abroad to play in a traditional club in Europe, but first I want to do well in the World Cup.

"I like Spanish football, the Italian, English - I like various styles of the game. I aspire to that. I want to be in a good team, that's all I want."

United and Spurs have not made formal offers, but it is believed Lazio had a one-year loan offer with the option to sign Barrera for £3 million rejected by his club.
