Hassler, Germany's World Cup and European Championship-winning former midfielder, visited Rugby Park on Friday and held talks with Killie chairman Michael Johnston but has decided to withdraw from the race.

"It's correct I have been to Scotland to talk to the club and it was an interesting option," he told the Scottish Sun. "I was happy to speak to them but I can say for sure our talks won't go any further."

Hassler's snub is a second blow for Johnston, who failed to land number one target Steve Kean after being unable to agree compensation with Blackburn for their first-team coach.

Former Celtic coach Peter Grant and ex-Dundee boss Alex Rae are among a host of names to have been linked with the role left vacant when Jimmy Calderwood decided to walk away after his short-term contract expired.

Hassler is currently working as a coach at Bundesliga club Cologne.
