Clausura review

Banfield halt Colon unbeaten run

March 5, 2010

Ruben Ramirez struck twice as Banfield halted Colon Santa Fe's unbeaten start to the Clausura campaign and jumped to third place.

Recent recruit Ramirez put Banfield ahead after just 13 minutes, and Cristian Garcia doubled their lead 19 minutes later. And veteran frontman Esteban Fuertes cut Banfield's lead in the 85th minute but Ramirez had the final say in the 90th minute to clinch victory.

Banfield jumped above Colon, who fell to fifth, and are now just two points behind surprise leaders Godoy Cruz.

River Plate beat fellow big guns San Lorenzo 1-0 in a battle between two teams who have been slow starters to the Clausura. The winner came in the 73rd minute when Gustavo Canales played in substitute Facundo Affranchino to score.

Gimnasia La Plata went sixth thanks to a 1-0 win away to Chacarita Juniors, with Hernan Encina grabbing the 86th-minute goal. Gimnasia prevailed despite having Sebastian Romero sent off in the first half.

Elsewhere, Atletico Tucuman pinch a point against Newell's Old Boys. Newell's had looked set for three points on their travels when Mauricio Sperdutti scored the game's opening goal after 59 minutes but Juan Pereyra netted an 89th-minute equaliser.
