West Ham have made a move for Benjani, only to be told that for the moment Roberto Mancini needs the striker who is expected to play a role in Wednesday night's Carling Cup semi-final, second leg against Manchester United.

Mancini started Benjani in his third game in charge - a 1-0 win over Middeslbrough in the FA Cup - and the striker has featured in every match since. It is believed Mancini wants him to remain with the club as cover for the returning Emmanuel Adebayor.

Blackburn are seeking a replacement for Benni McCarthy who is on the brink of joining the Hammers for £2.5 million though and are ready to rival the London club for the signature of Benjani.

A source close to developments told Soccernet on Wednesday evening: "Blackburn are showing interest."

It was reported in some quarters that Liverpool might also have made an enquiry, but the source added: "I would doubt that very much."
