Pohang Steelers name Lemos as new head coach

January 4, 2010

Asian champions Pohang Steelers have appointed experienced Brazilian Waldemar Lemos de Oliveira as their new coach.

The former Flamengo and Fluminese coach succeeds Sergio Farias after the Brazilian shocked the Steelers last month by joining Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli.

Lemos, who has also coached in Japan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, has signed a one-year contract and is set to arrive in Korea on Wednesday before taking charge of the team next Monday.

"He has lots of experience with big clubs in Brazil and he has also worked in the Asian region, but he is able to get the players working together well as a unit," said Pohang chief executive Kim Tae-min, who met with Lemos in Brazil last week.

"Most of all however, he showed a good understanding of Pohang Steelers and what we are about. He likes to play fast and attractive football that excites the fans and wants to win respect from other teams through beautiful and clean football."

The 55-year-old is the younger brother of current Kashima Antlers coach Oswaldo Oliveira, who has won the last three J League titles.
