Hollingshead guides Bruins past Gauchos

November 29, 2009

In a rematch of the 2006 NCAA title game, UCLA came away with a 2-1 comeback victory over UC Santa Barbara to advance to the the NCAA quarterfinals.

UCSB had struck first on a 10th minute David Walker goal, after Walker converted a cross from Peter McGlynn. However, the Bruins were quick to respond. Sophomore Fernando Monge scrambled in a loose ball from a 15th-minute corner and freshman Ryan Hollingshead scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute.

With the win, the Bruin seniors were able to exact a small bit of revenge on the Gauchos who defeated UCLA in the 2006 NCAA Championship game when they were freshmen. "We have a pretty big core of seniors on our team, and it was in the back of our heads tonight," said senior midfield Kyle Nakazawa. "It is a bit of redemption ... with a way better ending."

The sixth-seeded Bruins (12-3-4) will next face third-seeded Wake Forest (16-3-3) in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 pm ET.
