Real Madrid midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo expects he will have recovered sufficiently from an ankle injury to be able to return to training by the middle of the week.

Ronaldo was injured in late September and aggravated the problem in Portugal's 3-0 win over Hungary ten days later, but could return for second-placed Real's La Liga match against Racing Santander on Saturday.

"The most important thing for me is to return when I am at 100%," the Portuguese international said in an interview published in Monday's As newspaper. "Let's see what happens but around the middle of this week I am confident I will already be working with my team-mates.

"This week I will have another test to see if I am fit but the recovery is well on track."

Madrid will hope to have the £80 million man back as they host FC Zurich in the Champions League next week, before a showdown against arch rivals Barcelona at the Nou Camp at the end of the month, but Barca defender Rafael Marquez believes Ronaldo will have to remain patient and must not rush back from injury.

"It is not simple because it is bruising inside the bone and curing it is difficult. It takes time to recover from that. That was what happened with me," he told Barca's official website. "I took all the measures possible to play, but it was impossible. It was in the foot with which I kick most - that meant that even training was not possible. Walking hurt at times."
