Eredivisie review

FC Twente move to the summit

October 5, 2009

Steve McClaren's FC Twente side moved to the top of the Eredivisie after an impressive 3-1 win at Heracles Almelo.

The home side went ahead after eight minutes through Everton but Bryan Ruiz equalised before second half strikes from Blaise Nkufo and Theo Janssen settled it.

Twente are two points ahead of PSV Eindhoven, who were held to a goalless draw at fifth-placed FC Utrecht. PSV finished with 10 men following the 87th-minute sending-off of Balazs Dzsudzsak.

There was also late drama at Heerenveen with two goals in the final two minutes of their game against VVV-Venlo. VVV seemed on course for their second win of the season when Sandro Calabro put them ahead after 88 minutes but substitute Michal Papadopulos equalised shortly after.

Ajax moved up a place up to third with a 2-2 draw at Roda JC. Luis Suarez put the Amsterdammers ahead from the penalty spot after 23 minutes only for Arnaud Sutchuin Djoum to equalise within a minute.

Boldiszar Bodor then put Roda ahead but Suarez rescued Ajax with his second of the afternoon midway through the second half. Ajax had to hang on in the closing stages after Urby Emanuelson saw red with nine minutes to go.
