Frenchman Hubert Velud was named as the new coach of Togo on Wednesday, succeeding Jean Thissen whose tenure has ended after just seven months.

The change comes just 10 days before Togo take on group leaders Cameroon away in Yaounde in a 2010 World Cup qualifier. "The divorce between Mr. Thissen and his employers is confirmed," said Kodjo Elisa, technical director of the Togo Football Federation.

Thissen had been sidelined in bizarre circumstances before Togo's last qualifier against Morocco last month when officials claimed he was ill but the Belgian insisted he only had a bout of 'flu and was fit to do the job.

Velud has worked previously as a coach of clubs in France's lower leagues. Togo must avoid defeat against Cameroon to keep alive their hopes of a second successive World Cup finals appearance.
