Setback for Burnley as Chris McCann suffers knee damage
Burnley midfielder Chris McCann has been ruled out for around three months after sustaining knee ligament damage during Saturday's game against Sunderland.
McCann, who has started all six of the club's Premier League games this season, lasted only 28 minutes of the 3-1 victory at Turf Moor before being replaced by Joey Gudjonsson.
Tests have revealed that McCann has suffered medial ligament damage and manager Owen Coyle was disappointed to learn the news on Monday morning, with an eight-week absence the minimum period of recovery for the academy graduate.
"It's fair to say that Chris has suffered a bad injury and I would expect a minimum of two to three months," Coyle told the club's official website. "He has damaged his medial ligament and it will certainly be a couple of months before he is back.
"It's very unfortunate and a body blow for Chris. That's where my thoughts are because whenever he has been available he has been in my team. He was all set to take the Premier League by storm, and he will when he comes back."
Burnley could soon be cheered by the return of captain Steven Caldwell though as he will return to training on Monday. The captain has not featured yet this season due to a groin injury.
