Harry Redknapp and Jermain Defoe have been rewarded for their roles in Tottenham Hotspurs' outstanding start to the season with the Barclays manager and player of the month awards for August.

Spurs won all four of their Premier League matches in August, with Defoe scoring a hat-trick at Hull and also on target against West Ham United.

It is the first time the striker has won the monthly award, with Redknapp taking the manager's prize for the sixth time in his career.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has been named the League Championship manager of the month for August.

The Magpies started life in the Championship with a draw at West Bromwich Albion but have since recorded four wins in succession, beating Reading, Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester.

Hughton told official club website: "I'm delighted to take the award but thanks must go to the staff, especially Colin Calderwood and Paul Barron, and most importantly the players. They have been magnificent and this award is for them."

Charlton's Phil Parkinson was rewarded for his side's fine start with the League One award. The Addicks won five out of five in August including an impressive 4-0 win away to Tranmere.

Parkinson said: "We're very pleased with our start. The attitude of the players has been first class, however, and it's nice to get this accolade for myself and for the staff."

Dagenham and Redbridge boss John Still took the award in League Two after four wins in five games for his team.
