Sunderland have announced that midfielder Lorik Cana will captain the side this season, just over a month since his £5m move from Marseille.

Cana, 26, arrived at Sunderland with a big reputation having captained both the French club and his country, Albania, and it has taken little time for the combative midfielder to demonstrate his leadership credentials to his manager.

Sunderland were searching for a new permanent skipper following the sale of Dean Whitehead to Stoke City and Cana has now been handed the responsibility of leading the Wearsiders.

"I've made the decision and Lorik will remain captain of the club," Bruce told the club's official website. "He's done it before at his previous club, some might raise their eyebrows and think, 'he's a foreign player', but he speaks the language perfectly well.

"He leads by example, he's a good age, he's got experience, he captains his country, he captained his old club in Marseille. I think anyone who's watched him will understand why I've made him captain of the club."

Cana has struck up an uncompromising partnership with fellow new signing Lee Cattermole in a Sunderland side that enjoyed its best ever start to a Premier League season when winning two of their first three games.
