Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Sebastien Bassong after they agreed a fee with Newcastle, believed to be around £8m.

GettyImagesBassong's dismissal against Fulham means he will miss Spurs' first two games.

Reports claim the Newcastle centre-half completed his medical in the capital on Thursday morning and should be announced as a Spurs player by the end of the day.

The 23-year-old is the latest Toon player to become disillusioned with life on Tyneside as the club prepare to begin their Championship campaign with an impasse in their search for a new owner, and no permanent manager in charge.

Harry Redknapp has long been tracking the Frenchman. He said last week: "I like Bassong, he is a young player with a good future and a good central defender."

Spurs are facing a defensive crisis with Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson both doubtful through injury and Ledley King's fitness a constant concern.

If Bassong were to join before Saturday he would be suspended for Tottenham's first two Premier League games following his red card against Fulham in Newcastle's penultimate game of last season.

Bassong was recently fined two weeks wages by the club for refusing to travel to Scotland for a friendly against Dundee.
