Laporta: Barcelona on brink of greatest ever season

May 17, 2009

Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes this season will go down as the best in club history if they can cap it by winning the Champions League.

Barca are already two-thirds of the way towards an historic trophy treble after adding the Primera Division title to the Copa del Rey success they enjoyed in midweek after beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1.

The Catalan giants were crowned league champions for the first time since 2006 without even kicking a ball, as second-placed Real Madrid's 3-2 defeat at Villarreal means they are now eight points behind Pep Guardiola's side with only two games left.

"It's been a dream come true in a year of records. I've spoken with Guardiola and congratulated him, but I want to make my congratulations public," said Laporta.

"I've also spoken with Carles (Puyol) to give my congratulations to all the squad, technical team and people like Txiki Begiristain and Manel Estiarte, who have worked hard to get us to where we are.

"I've also sent texts to be my fellow board members. These are moments to enjoy," added Laporta, who believes the current side will go down in club folklore if they can also win the Champions League final against Manchester United later this month.

No Spanish club has ever won the treble of league, cup and European Cup, but Barca have a chance to do that now in what has already been a remarkable first campaign under new coach Guardiola.

"Football-wise it's one of the best seasons in the history of Barcelona, in terms of play, titles and the general state of the club. It will be the best if we win the Champions League," Laporta told Barca TV.
