Major League Soccer's 16th team, expansion franchise Philadelphia, has finally settled on a name. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia is expected to announce on Monday that its new pro soccer team will be named the Union and will take the field wearing blue and gold.
In choosing Union, the team references Philadelphia's part in the nation's founding and its historic role in the American labor movement. The team is also expected to reveal its new logo on Monday, a circular emblem that bears a rising snake.
In selecting the Union, Philadelphia has concluded a search that had carried on for months. The name Independence was thought to be an early favoite, but didn't make the final cut of four finalists. Fans were invited to vote at Philly.com for their choice, with the team pledging to stand by the ballot results.
The other finalists were Philadelphia SC, the initials standing for "Soccer Club;" Philadelphia AC, for "Athletic Club," and Philadelphia City.
