CHICAGO -- Abby Wambach will lead the United States in matches against Japan this month, aiming for her 100th career international goal.
Wambach was among 21 players on the U.S. roster announced Wednesday by coach Pia Sundhage. The U.S. team will face Japan on May 20 in Frisco, Texas, and May 23 in Sandy, Utah.
The matches will mark the return of Wambach to international play since she suffered a broken leg in July against Brazil in the final pre-Olympic match. Wambach needs one goal to join four other U.S. players -- Mia Hamm (158), Kristine Lilly (129), Michelle Akers (105) and Tiffeny Milbrett (100) -- in the 100-goal club.
Other veterans on the roster include team captain Christie Rampone, co-captain Lori Chalupny, Heather Mitts, Carli Lloyd, Shannon Boxx, Angela Hucles, Heather O'Reilly and Lindsay Tarpley. Goalkeepers include Hope Solo and Nicole Barnhart.
Thirteen players on the roster helped the U.S. win gold at the Beijing Olympics.
Four college players also made the team: Lauren Cheney (UCLA), Christine Nairn (Penn State), Casey Nogueira (North Carolina) and Kelsey Davis (Portland).
The Japan games will be the first home matches of the year for the U.S. team, which is in early preparations for qualifying for the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany.
