Internacional on verge of Copa quarter-final spot

April 30, 2009

Internacional took a big step towards the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals as they beat Nautico 3-0 in Recife.

Goals by Nilmar, Taison and Marcelo Cordeiro give Tite's side a healthy advantage going into the second leg.

And Taison believes the Campeonato Gaucho winners will use this result as a springboard for the rest of the competition.

"We already won the Campeonato Gaucho and today we showed we can also win the Copa do Brasil," he said. "We have a lot of experience of killing off these kind of ties."

Elsewhere, Atletico Paranaense defeated Corinthians 3-2 at home in the first leg of their tie.

The result was not as bad as it could have been for Corinthians, as they found themselves 3-0 down after 50 minutes thanks to goals from Wallyson, Rafael Moura and Chico.

Striker Chicao then had the chance to make it 4-0, but when he hit the post Corinthians started to fight back and despite losing star player Ronaldo to a serious looking rib injury goals from Cristian and Denthino in the final four minutes set up a tense second leg.

"Tonight was very hard. Thank God in the final minutes we scored two goals and now the situation is favourable to us," Cristian declared.

Vitoria are on the verge of reaching the next round as they destroyed Atletico Mineiro 3-0 in Salvador.

Striker Neto Baiano was the star of the game as he scored twice, while defender Victor Ramos added another with a header.

Coritiba also put one foot in the quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over CSA. Marcelinho Paraiba scored twice for the winners while Marcio Gabriel and Carlinhos Paraiba added one apiece.

Fortaleza earned a valuable 0-0 draw on their visit to Flamengo and will resolve the tie at home in Ceara state, while Ponte Preta and Americano also drew 0-0 in Campinhas and will define who advance to the quarter-finals next week in Rio de Janeiro.

Tonight Vasco da Gama will welcome Icasa and Fluminense will visit Goias in the final two games of the last-16 first leg.
