Gerets praises players as Marseille move clear

April 27, 2009

Marseille coach Eric Gerets hailed his side's endless commitment after seeing them score a 2-1 victory over Lille.

OM head the Ligue 1 standings with five games to play as they hunt down their first league success in 17 years.

"Individual class and the teamwork of our players made the difference. Each player in the squad would die for each other.

"Before the game I thought that one point away in Lille could have been good. But after 45 minutes I told my players to try to get the victory because we were stronger than Lille.

"It's a deserved victory. With a little more composure it could have been 4-1."

Marseille top the table five points ahead from Bordeaux, who have a game in the hand, but at the moment he is just happy to have seen off Lille from the title race.

"First of all I think we have eliminated one more team who had a chance of being champions," he said.

"It is too late for Lille now. Lille were a serious contestant for the title, with very good players. That has not changed, they are still a good team, but they have lost two games in a row. But I am sure that Lille will have a brilliant future."

Gerets, though, still expects Lyon to have a say in the destination of the title despite their draw with Paris St Germain at the weekend - a result which leaves the title holders six points adrift from the top.

"We have to play against Lyon very soon. Everything depends on us now."
