The U.S. U-17 men's national team opened Group A play in the CONCACAF U-17 Championship with a 5-0 defeat of Cuba at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. Stefan Jerome opened the scoring for the U.S. in the 31st minute, while Jack McInerney stood out with two goals and two assists.
The U.S. will play Canada on April 23 and round out Group A play against Honduras on April 25, with both games scheduled for 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET).
The top two finishers in Group A will advance to the semifinals of the tournament and play one of the top two teams from Group B. Group B is comprised of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago.
The semifinals will be played on April 29, with the final and third-place match played on May 2. The four semifinalists from the tourney will qualify for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which is slated for Nigeria from Oct. 24 to Nov. 15
