Islanders avenge championship defeat

April 20, 2009

It may be a small matter of consolation given the circumstances, but the Puerto Rico Islanders earned some immediate vengeance against Vancouver for their 2-1 championship game loss last fall. This time, at home, against the defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday evening, the Islanders won 2-1. Former Whitecaps striker Nicholas Addlery would prove to be a decisive factor.

While the Whitecaps may have gotten on the board first courtesy of Marcus Haber two minutes into the affair, Adderly came back to haunt them beginning just four minutes later when he put away a square ball from Noah Delgado to level terms. Addlery, who scored a goal in each of his first three games with the club in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals over the past two months, would provide the game winner in the 38th. He beat Vancouver's offside trap on a long ball from defender Cristian Arrieta and raced in on goal, beating goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

Cleveland City Stars 1 at Miami FC Blues 3

The return of Diego Serna proved to be a triumphant affair Saturday evening as he tallied a goal and two assists on the night. He set up Alen Marcina in the 28th. After Cleveland's Ricardo Pierre-Louis tied the match at 1-1, Serna put the hosts ahead when he blocked a poor clearance out of the back and raced in on goal alone, beating Chris Seitz, on loan from Real Salt Lake. A red card to Joshua Boateng left the promoted USL-2 champion City Stars a man down in the 43rd. Serna connected with Leo Inacio Nunes to ice the game in the 79th.

Rochester Rhinos 0 at Carolina RailHawks 1

The RailHawks posted their first-ever win over Rochester in three years of play when Sallieu Bundu put away the winner in the 53rd minute from about seven yards out on a Josh Gardner cross. The rest of the game featured red cards as Rochester's Danny Earls was sent off for a tackle in the 56th and Carolina's Devon McKenney for a second yellow in the 84th. The Rhinos' John Ball also saw red for dissent at the close of the game.

Montreal Impact 0 at Charleston Battery 0

The Battery posted their second straight shutout, but also have yet to score on the campaign. Dusty Hudock led the way for Charleston as Matt Jordan posted the clean sheet for Montreal at the other end.

Minnesota Thunder 1 at Austin Aztex 1

The expansion Austin Aztex earned a point in their debut, but it was not easy. The visitors got on the board six minutes into the second half courtesy of Leonel Saint-Preux. Within five minutes of entering, Sullivan Silva set up defender Lyle Adams for the equalizer in the 69th minute.

USL Second Division

The opening game of the USL-2 season got off to a quiet start as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Crystal Palace Baltimore played to a scoreless draw Friday in Baltimore. On Saturday, however, the Richmond Kickers and Harrisburg City Islanders provided some excitement with a 2-2 tie. In his return to Richmond after spending time with Rochester in USL-1, Matthew Delicate opened his account with a strike in the 16th minute only to see the visitors level seven minutes later. Steve Fish tallied the equalizer and then set up Mo Oduor for the go-ahead goal two minutes before the break. A controversial penalty awarded to Richmond five minutes allowed David Bulow to convert from the mark.
