Real Madrid midfielder Julien Faubert missed training on Sunday because he mistakenly thought he had the day off, coach Juande Ramos has revealed.

GettyImagesAlfredo di Stefano had to look twice, but was right, Faubert had signed.

The former West Ham United midfielder, who shocked the world by signing for the Spanish giants in January, failed to turn up at the session, but Ramos was quick to absolve the rarely-used Frenchman of any blame.

"The boy got confused, nothing more," Ramos said at a news conference. "He knows there is an internal disciplinary system and he is prepared to abide by it so there is no problem."

Rumours in the Spanish capital have suggested that sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, was not consulted over the purchase of Faubert - who has only made two substitute appearances since his arrival.

The club were linked with the 25-year-old when he was impressing at Bordeaux, during a run of form that saw him earn a place in the French national team three years ago, but he chose to go to West Ham where he immediately struggled with injury and form.

His move to Madrid in January caused consternation among the fans after he had failed to impress at Upton Park and the Spanish club are highly unlikely to consider keeping him in the summer when a major reshaping of the squad is due to take place.

Meanwhile, Real defender Pepe has insisted he is determined to make history in the long-term with the club.

The Portugal international is reportedly in talks over a new improved contract, and he has confirmed that leaving the Spanish capital never crossed his mind.

The former FC Porto star joined Los Blancos in summer 2007 and immediately imposed himself at centre back, particularly shining in the victory away to Barcelona last term.

Brazil-born Pepe has confirmed he is willing to extend his stay at the Bernabeu, telling AS: "I am good and happy at Madrid. Everything comes in its time.

"My desire was always to become an important part of Madrid, to see my name next to the best ones. Only work helps you achieve it."
