Kiwis to play Italy in Confederations build-up

April 3, 2009

New Zealand have secured a friendly against world champions Italy as part of their build-up for the Confederations Cup in South Africa in June.

New Zealand will play Italy in the Pretoria township of Atteridgeville on June 10, four days before their opening Confederations Cup match against European champions Spain.

"Playing the best team in the world is a highlight and a stern test for any player or coach but playing the best two teams in the world back-to-back is a real coup," New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said in a statement.

New Zealand, who qualified for the Confederations Cup by winning the Oceania division, will also play warmups in Tanzania on June 3 and Botswana three days later to acclimatise to African conditions.
