CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Islanders shut out Cruz Azul in CCL first leg

March 17, 2009

The Puerto Rico Islanders stunned Cruz Azul with a 2-0 first leg semifinal win in the CONCACAF Champions League in front of a crowd of 13,000 at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

With goals from Sandy Gbandi and Nicholas Addlery, the USL's Islanders became only the second team in the tournament to score more than once in a single game against the Mexican team.

Gbandi opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he took a pass from Josh Hansen and slotted it home from 16 yards out. The Islanders doubled their lead in the 37th minute when Addlery converted a cross by Gbandi to notch his third consecutive goal in the Champions League.

The series concludes in Mexico City at Estadio Azul on April 7. The winner of the series will face the winner of the all-Mexican semifinal featuring Atlante and Santos Laguna, whom the Islanders defeated in the Group Stage.
