Vasco prove to be too strong for Botafogo

Vasco da Gama destroyed rivals Botafogo 4-1 to maintain their perfect record in the second stage of the Rio de Janeiro state tournament.

Striker Elton put Vasco ahead after just two minutes before heading home a second shortly after the break.

Thiaguinho pulled a goal back for Botafogo nine minutes after the hour mark, but Leo Lima and Carlos Alberto responded for Dorival Junior's Vasco.

Elsewhere in the second round of the Taca Rio, Americano hammered Mesquita 5-1, Boavista beat Cabofriense 2-0 and Resende shared a 1-1 draw with Bangu.

In the Sao Paulo state tournament, Washington scored a hat-trick in Sao Paulo's 5-0 victory over 10-man Mirassol, who had midfielder Deleu sent-off.

Borges and Washington put Muricy Ramalho's side two ahead at the break and after Jorge Wagner headed home after half-time, Washington netted twice to complete his hat-trick and seal the win.

Third-placed Sao Paulo trail leaders Palmeiras by four points and second-placed Corinthians by just one.

Santos missed out on a place in the top four as Roni headed home with five minutes remaining to rescue a 1-1 draw with Paulista, who had taken the lead through Ze Carlos in the first half.

Finally, in the Rio Grande do Sul state tournament, Juventude recorded their first win of the second stage by beating Internacional from Santa Maria 3-0.
