Islanders stun Marathon to advance to CCL semifinals

March 4, 2009

The Puerto Rico Islanders stunned Honduran champion Marathon with a 1-0 win in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Puerto Rico advanced to the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals with an overall 3-1 aggregate score.

In a match that was much slower in pace than the first-leg meeting in Bayamon, Puerto Rico played a more defensive-oriented game with its star Jonathan Steele sidelined for the match. Marathon pressured the Islanders throughout the game but failed to find the net.

With the game already at the end of regulation and into stoppage time, Puerto Rico capitalized on a late counterattack to seal the game when Nicholas Addlery finished a breakaway.

Puerto Rico will now face Mexican team Cruz Azul in the semis. Cruz Azul advanced after defeating Mexico City rival Pumas UNAM 2-0 on aggregate.
