Three professional footballers and two football agents have been arrested in Spain after 600 kg of cocaine was seized in Madrid. The arrests were made on Wednesday in Madrid, Valencia and Alicante.

An official revealed one of the footballers is still playing in Spain with Segunda side Rayo Vallecano while two have retired and played for Athletic Bilbao.

A total of 11 people have been arrested in the investigation though none of those involved have been officially identified at the moment.

The cocaine was shipped in from Argentina via Tangiers, Morocco in a container meant to wind-power generation equipment, the police said.

The drugs were uncovered in a warehouse and marks one of the biggest seizures in recent times.

Newspaper El Pais reported that the cocaine would have fetched more than £70m on the street.

One of the agents is said to be Spanish and the other is a Serbian-born French citizen.

The French suspect, allegedly the leader of the drug ring, traveled often to South America to handle player signings, and apparently used these trips to establish contacts for shipping drugs to Europe.
