Joint 2018 bid risky says England marketing chief
England's rivals to host the 2018 World Cup may be taking a risk by launching a joint bid, according to a senior England bid figure today.
David Magliano, commercial and marketing director for England 2018, believes it may be too expensive.
He told a sports marketing conference in Central London: "FIFA's experience of a joint World Cup in Korea and Japan was fraught with expense, and we believe that, given the choice of a bid from a single nation, we feel (that is best).
"Just between ourselves, we feel that the Spanish and Portuguese are taking a little bit of a risk by mounting a joint bid, so it (the decision) was taken not to mount a joint bid to help our chances of success.''
He told delegates that "consideration'' had been taken to possibly include sites in Scotland and Wales, but added: "Notice it is an England 2018 Cup bid.''
But Mr Magliano did say that, "all things being equal, we are disposed to try and make this an event across the whole country.''
He said that England is "fanatical about football'' and could promise a "home from home welcome'' to the international squads, many of whose players are already stars in the Premier League.
FIFA will decide next month whether joint bids will be permitted for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
