Everton fear ligament damage for Anichebe

February 17, 2009

Everton forward Victor Anichebe will have to wait to find out the full extent of the injury he sustained in the horror tackle from Kevin Nolan at the weekend.

Scans have revealed the 20-year-old suffered strained ligaments in his right knee, and as a result is "very sore indeed", the Merseyside club said on Tuesday.

Newcastle midfielder Nolan was shown a straight red card for the tackle on the Nigeria international in the goalless draw at St James' Park on Sunday.

Although Anichebe's shin and ankle bore the brunt of the challenge it is the knee which is causing concern.

"Victor has got very bad bruising on his shin and on the outside of his ankle but we're not overly concerned about that," head physio Mick Rathbone said.

"However, he has had a series of scans and he appears to have strained ligaments on the outside of his right knee.

"He is very sore indeed and we need to take a few days to let the area settle down before we can properly make an accurate clinical evaluation."
