Newcastle have reportedly agreed a fee with Bolton for their captain Kevin Nolan according to The Evening Chronicle.

The former Liverpool trainee and Bolton skipper, who has only just returned to the Trotters' side after suspension, is set to undergo a medical on Tyneside on Friday morning ahead of a reported £4m deal.

It's understood that the Magpies have acted quickly following the news that Joey Barton has been ruled out for two months following a foot injury.

The 26-year-old has spent his entire career to date at Bolton, breaking into the Trotters' first team fold a decade ago.

He has earned international honours with England's U21s in the past, while he has often been mentioned in connection with a step up into the senior squad.

Newcastle and Bolton have yet to confirm that an agreement has been reached for the combative midfielder, but reports claim a deal is imminent.

The cash could go towards the Trotters' pursuit of Portuguese star Miguel Veloso, but some sources have claimed that Newcastle themselves are interested in a £10m bid for the midfielder.
