January 29, 2009

Sao Paulo secured a 2-0 win at Guarani to climb into second place in the Campeonato Paulista.

The visitors took the lead through a Plinio own goal midway through the second half before Hernanes sealed the win with one minute remaining.

Sao Paulo have seven points and are alongside Corinthians who beat Botafogo 2-0.

Corinthians went ahead early in the game when Botafogo defender Jonilson handled the ball inside the area and Chicao fired home from the resulting penalty. Diego then got his side's second in the 83rd minute.

Elsewhere, Oeste beat Ituano 1-0, Mogi Mirim defeated Paulista 2-1 and Gremio Barueri secured a 1-0 victory over Sao Caetano.

In the second round of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, Vasco da Gama hammered Tigres 4-0 to pick up their first three points of the competition.

Vasco forward Rodrigo Pimpao broke the deadlock in the 37th minute before Nilton scored from Paulo Sergio's free kick to double his side's advantage.

Substitute Faioli grabbed a brace to round off the scoring.

"I want to start all the time but I always accept the coach's decision and wait for my chance," said Faioli. "If I have to come off the bench and score, as I did today, then so be it."

Dorival Junior's Vasco moved up to third in Group A and are three points behind leaders Americano and one below Resende, who saw off Cabofriense 3-1.

In another Group A encounter Fluminense drew 0-0 with Madureira while in Group B Volta Redonda drew 1-1 against Boavista.

In Porto Alegre State Championships, Andrezinho's free kick gave Inter a 1-0 victory at Sao Luiz to send Tite's side to the top of Group A with seven points after three rounds.
