French Cup: St.Etienne knock out Bordeaux

January 3, 2009

Ligue 1 strugglers St Etienne put their worries aside to knock Girondins Bordeaux out of the French Cup round of 64 on Saturday thanks to a late Bafetimbi Gomis goal.

France striker Gomis struck with a low angled shot from inside the box against the run of play on 74 minutes to seal a 1-0 victory for once-great St Etienne, lying fourth from bottom in the league standings.

Bordeaux, second to Olympique Lyon in Ligue 1, had dominated play before their home fans but wasted many chances and failed to survive the first round involving top-flight clubs.

Stade Rennes went through in one of four all-Ligue 1 ties by winning 1-0 at Sochaux thanks to a first-half goal by Moussa Sow.

The biggest upset came from the Alsatian village of Schirrhein. The smallest club left in the draw, playing in the seventh division, recovered from two goals down to knock out second division Clermont 4-2 with four goals in the last 25 minutes.

Holders Lyon's tie at amateurs Concarneau was postponed because of a frozen pitch. The game was due to kick off at 2000 GMT at Guingamp, a town near Concarneau in Brittany. No new date has been set yet.

Paris St Germain and fellow French Cup specialists Olympique Marseille visit amateur sides in Montlucon and Besancon respectively on the final day of last 64 action on Sunday.
