Maradona arrives in Glasgow for Argentina bow

November 16, 2008

Diego Maradona touched down in Scotland today, sparking a media frenzy at Glasgow airport.

The 48-year-old football legend is set to take charge of Argentina for the first time in Wednesday night's glamour friendly at Hampden Park.

His plane, which arrived via Madrid, landed shortly after 11am but Maradona decided not to stop and speak at length to the waiting press.

That sparked a media scrum, with Maradona surrounded by police as he made the short walk from the terminal to a waiting coach.

Despite being peppered with questions along the way, the 1986 World Cup-winning captain said little.

Asked how it felt to be in Scotland, he answered in Spanish: "Contento (happy).''

His only words in English were: "I don't speak English.''

After clambering onto the coach, Maradona returned to the entrance to sign a few items of memorabilia, including a poster of his infamous 'Hand of God' goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final.

Maradona, whose coaching experience is extremely limited, was appointed head coach of Argentina at the end of last month.
