Emery takes blame for shock loss to Gijon

November 16, 2008

Valencia coach Unai Emery refused to single out any of his players for criticism following Saturday's home defeat to Sporting Gijon, insisting if anyone is to blame it should be him.

Los Che missed the chance to provisionally take over top spot in the Primera Liga after going down 3-2 to promoted Sporting, but Emery was not interested in searching for any scapegoats amongst his team.

"I'm not looking for anyone to blame. If there's anyone, then it's me," he said. "At 2-1 and 3-2 down, we'd got back into the game and the attitude of the team cannot be questioned, although we have to find the best ways to win. Something is failing.

"We first have to lift ourselves up and then put this defeat behind us. We were doing well until the last two weeks and we have to get back to where we were."

The result was only Valencia's second league defeat of the season, although their first came in their previous home game at the Mestalla when they crashed 4-2 against Racing Santander.

Emery added: "It's been a similar game to that against Racing where our opponents have been very effective. They have been well-organised and that's given them the win."
