Eredivisie: AZ return to the top, Huntelaar injury

November 9, 2008

AZ Alkmaar and Ajax continue to set the standard in the Eredivisie with both teams claiming convincing victories today.

AZ returned to the top of the table with a 3-0 defeat of FC Twente. Brazilian striker Ari opened the scoring after 36 minutes with Mounir El Hamdaoui quickly adding another to give the hosts the edge at the interval.

Ari then notched his second goal of the afternoon to stretch AZ's unbeaten league run to eight matches.

They are joined on 22 points by Ajax, who enjoyed a 5-2 hammering of Sparta Rotterdam.

Goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Luis Suarez, Evander Sno, Kennedy Bakircioglu and Leonardo earned the Amsterdam club their fifth successive league triumph.

However, Huntelaar was later injured and limped off the pitch before the interval after twisting his ankle.

The striker is now doubtful for Wednesday's cup tie against Volendam and next Sunday's clash against PSV Eindhoven.

NAC Breda are also level with the leaders thanks to their 2-0 victory over De Graafschap on Friday.

It was a day of big scorelines in Holland with FC Groningen putting five past basement boys FC Volendam without reply.

Goals from Koen van der Laak, Goran Lovre and Petter Andersson ensured the hosts were out of sight within 23 minutes and van der Laak and Marcus Berg added to the humiliation after the break.

Two goals in the dying minutes also saw Feyenoord run out 5-2 winners over FC Utrecht at De Kuip.

Goals from Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Diego Biseswar (two) put the home side ahead within the first 30 minutes, but Alje Schut and Mihai Nesu dragged Utrecht back into the game.

Karim El Ahmadi and Roy Makaay erased all hopes of a comeback with a strike each in stoppage time.

Heerenveen bucked the scoring trend with a narrow 1-0 win at ADO Den Haag in the late kick-off.

Substitute Bonaventure Kalou grabbed the only goal four minutes from time to give Trond Sollied's men their first win in five league fixtures.
