Sunderland manager Roy Keane hopes some minor skirmishes between fans will not detract from his side's first home win over rivals Newcastle United in 28 years.
Djibril Cisse put the Black Cats in front at the Stadium of Light before Shola Ameobi levelled with a far-post header, but Kieran Richardson ensured the hosts would take the points with a drilled free-kick from just outside the box.
A small number of Sunderland fans invaded the pitch at the end of the match and there was an increased security presence as fans came close to clashing after full-time.
But Keane hopes they are not the dominant images of a famous win.
''We've finally defeated Newcastle on home turf for the first time in 28 years and I thought it was an excellent game,'' Keane told Sky Sports 1.
''It's always nice to beat your local rivals and everybody has been reminding us how long it has been. But we deserved it, we played some good stuff.
''We'll have to wait and see (about the fans) but hopefully it won't take away from what the players have achieved. Nobody likes to see fans on the pitch, trust me, but hopefully they (the FA) will go easy on us because the fans have to enjoy it.
''If one or two ran on the pitch ... well, they've had plenty of time to wait for the chance.''
Match-winner Richardson added: ''We haven't won too many games at home this season and what a day to achieve that. We've worked hard for each other and got a fantastic result.''
