URICH, Switzerland -- Countries hoping to stage the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were left waiting for details on the bidding process Friday after FIFA executive committee members failed to agree on a timetable to choose a host for the tournaments.
They were considering a proposal from FIFA president Sepp Blatter to kick off a combined search for countries to stage the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
The issue will go before the next executive meeting in Tokyo in December.
Candidates to host the 2018 World Cup include Mexico, the United States, England, Spain, a combined Netherlands-Belgium bid, Russia, Australia, Qatar, China and Japan.
With the 2010 tournament being played in South Africa and the 2014 event in Brazil, a northern hemisphere venue is expected for 2018.
World Cup hosts are chosen by the FIFA executive committee.
