MADRID, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Crowd trouble forced the Primera Liga match between Espanyol and Barcelona to be halted for several minutes during the second half on Saturday.
Home side Espanyol were 1-0 in front when television pictures showed flares being thrown from Barca fans in the upper stand in the direction of home fans below them.
Incensed Espanyol fans tried to escape onto the pitch but were prevented by police and stewards.
Barcelona president Joan Laports was seen in angry exchanges in the directors box as the drama unfolded.
Referee Medina Cantalejo to take the players off the pitch for almost 10 minutes.
The game was eventually restarted, Cantalejo's decision to award Barcelona a last-gasp penalty hardly helping the tense atmosphere.
