BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Defenders Lori Chalupny and Kate Markgraf scored goals to help the Olympic champion U.S. women's soccer team beat Ireland 2-0 on Saturday night, the Americans' third straight shutout victory in the three-game series.
"We really came together as a team at the Olympics," midfielder Lindsay Tarpley said. "Now we had a chance to show our fans how we play. We win games as a team."
Chalupny opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Lindsay Tarpley found Chalupny in the box. She settled the ball and blasted it into the net.
In the 31st minute, Natasha Kai was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Markgraf took the kick and sent a clean shot into the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead. Markgraf's goal marked the first of her career in her 193rd appearance.
"I've played with this team for 10 years and I didn't have a goal," Markgraf said. "Today it just came. I'm very happy."
