Lyon rocked by injury to defender Grosso

September 8, 2008

Lyon defender Fabio Grosso will be out of action for around a month after fracturing ribs while on international duty with Italy.

The left-back sustained the injury in the 18th minute of the Azzurri's 2-1 victory over Cyprus on Saturday.

"It isn't a very serious injury but it is very painful for him each time he runs," said Bernard Lacombe, the advisor to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, on the club's website.

"We can't do a great deal to help him. We just have to give him time."

Grosso is now likely to miss six matches for Lyon - Ligue 1 games against Nice, Le Havre, Nancy and Le Mans, and Champions League group fixtures against Fiorentina and Bayern Munich.

Les Gones have no genuine cover for Grosso, so midfielder Kim Kallstrom could revert to left-back for the next few weeks.

The Sweden international did so in Lyon's 1-0 win over St Etienne the weekend before last.

Anthony Reveillere can also fill in on the left but he is already covering for Francois Clerc, the France right-back who will be sidelined for a further five months with knee-ligament damage.

Youngsters Lamine Gassama and Thimothee Kolodzieczak may also have a role to play in the first team over the next month.

Lacombe added that Lyon were unlikely to sign a player on loan as a temporary replacement for Grosso.
