BERLIN, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Surprise early season leaders 1899 Hoffenheim came back down to earth with a bump on Saturday when they suffered a 5-2 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen.
Hoffenheim, the village team with high ambitions in the Bundesliga, fell 2-0 behind early on. They fought back to 2-1 and later 3-2 but never looked like extending the only 100 per cent record in the division.
Schalke 04 took advantage to take over at the top with a 1-0 win at home to local rivals Bochum.
With three games played, Schalke lead the standings with seven points, ahead of Hamburg SV and Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Hoffenheim drop to fifth place on six points.
Champions Bayern Munich, who have just two points from their opening two games, look for a first league win of the season at home to Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
