The 28-year-old is understood to have flown to Blackburn to seal the deal, which would see his current club Torino pick up around £3.75million.

'I think English football at the moment has taken over, it's improved so much, it's full of world champions and it's something that, having been 10 years in Italy, interests me,' he said last week.

Grella rose to prominence in the Serie A in 1998 and went on to make nearly 200 appearances in the Italian league, captaining Parma under ex-Chelsea and current Juve boss Claudio Raineri.

The Adelaide Advertiser also claims that former Carlton team-mate Mark Bresciano is close to signing for Scottish Premier League club Rangers.

The Ibrox outfit have money to spend after the sale of Carlos Cuellar, but Bresciano (who has also been courted by West Ham and Man City in the past) could cost as much as £13million.

Bresciano and Grella are also expected to feature in Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek's final 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying assault when Australia faces Holland in Eindhoven on September 6 before meeting Uzbekistan four days later in Tashkent.

Grella told The Advertiser that destination South Africa remained a priority.

'We just want to get to that World Cup,' Grella said. 'We're still bitter after the (2007) Asian Cup (failure).'
