Bruce Arena began his overhaul of the struggling Los Angeles Galaxy today by trading high-earning striker Carlos Ruiz to Toronto and snapping up veteran winger Eddie Lewis.

By selling Ruiz, Arena - who took over as Galaxy head coach and general manager on Monday - frees up significant space under the salary cap to reorganise his roster.

Ruiz was one of three designated players at Galaxy alongside David Beckham and Landon Donovan, taking up a huge chunk of the team's budget.

Arena instantly spent some of the freed up money by signing Lewis, who returns home after a length spell in England with Fulham, Preston, Leeds and Derby.

The United States international, 34, previously played in MLS with San Jose.

Toronto coach Mo Johnston, the former Rangers, Celtic and Watford striker, said: 'We're looking forward to bringing in another quality striker.

'We're very excited to get Ruiz in here - he holds the ball up well and is a clinical finisher.'

Ruiz takes the place of Laurent Robert on the Toronto FC roster after the former Newcastle winger was released.
