On a busy day for Portsmouth the club have completed the permanent signing of winger Jerome Thomas from Charlton Athletic and taken Arsenal's French left-back Armand Traore on a one-year loan deal.

Pompey offered Thomas a one-year contract after the 25-year-old had impressed in the first month of a one-year loan deal from Charlton; the Championship side will now receive an undisclosed fee if Thomas makes a certain number of appearances.

The decision to make Thomas' loan move permanent created space on the books for the Traore deal; under Premier League rules clubs are allowed a maximum of two temporary signings at any time and already have Chelsea's Ben Sahar on a six-month loan deal.

Peter Storie, the Fratton Park club's chief executive, said: 'Jerome could have been recalled by Charlton in January under the terms of his loan, but that's no longer a factor now.'

Traore joined the Gunners from Monaco in 2005 and made 18 first-team appearances, including the 2006 Carling Cup final.

With Arsenal having completed the surprise £750,000 signing of Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United Arsene Wenger opted to send out highly-rated 18-year-old Traore to Fratton Park for more first-team experience.
