Carew pens Villa contract extension

August 14, 2008

Aston Villa striker John Carew has committed himself to the club for a further 12 months.

The 28-year-old was Villa's top scorer in the Premier League last season as he netted on 13 occasions and he is now tied to the club until 2011.

Martin O'Neill has spoken of his desire to maintain his star players and the news will come as a major boost to the Villa Park boss as he attempts to improve on last season's sixth-placed league finish.

Carew joined Villa from Lyon in January 2007 and has since become a major part of O'Neill's plans.

A statement on Villa's official website said: 'Talismanic striker John Carew has handed Villa a pre-season boost by penning a 12-month extension to his current deal.'
